Making a Murderer | IMDb RATING 8.5

The first season of Netflix’s “Making A Murderer” covers the life of Steven Avery, who was convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder in 1985, then exonerated by DNA evidence 18 years later. Many people consider the show to be one of the top five most entertaining Netflix series ever. Avery sued the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department for $36 million and was in the middle of that lawsuit when, two years after his release from prison, he became the prime suspect in a new crime: The murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.

The series takes an intimate look at Avery’s past, including his troubled relationship with his ex-wife and his time spent in prison. It also follows former prosecutor Ken Kratz, who was involved in both Avery trials. And it introduces us to Avery’s defense team, led by Wisconsin attorneys Dean Strang and Jerry Buting. The Netflix crime documentary series Making a Murderer has captivated audiences, who are now busily debating whether Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are guilty or innocent of murdering Teresa Halbach. If you like crime dramas, then you’re going to love the crime series Making a Murderer on Netflix.

The Sinner | IMDb RATING 7.9

USA’s anthology series The Sinner is one of the most underrated crime dramas on television, which is a pity because it takes a unique approach to tell its stories. It’s not the whodunnit angle, nor is it the mystery of who committed the crime that fascinates. Instead, it’s all about the psychology surrounding the crime, as well as the motivations of the person who did it.

Rather than having to stretch a plot through ten or twelve episodes, the series can tell a self-contained story with a brand new cast and setting every season. This allows the show to feel fresh each time, while still diving deeper into the mystery of why these crimes are committed. There’s something really satisfying about seeing how these stories end up, and for that reason, The Sinner remains a terrific example of just how great an anthology series can be.

Season 1 was a gritty look at how a seemingly happy housewife could commit such an awful act, and how someone could so easily justify such behavior. Season 2, meanwhile, took a look at how just one moment of violence can spiral out of control into something much worse. The Sinner (TV series) is one of the best crime web series on Netflix, it’s a real thriller.

Mindhunter | IMDb RATING 8.6

Mindhunter follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they travel the country, interviewing imprisoned serial killers to try and figure out why they committed « the most atrocious crimes imaginable ».

The true-crime series is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, by former special agents John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It was in his capacity as a special agent that Douglas helped pioneer criminal profiling techniques in the 1970s.

Douglas is the real-life model for the main character Holden Ford in Mindhunter. He was known for having studied hundreds of cases and interviewed dozens of incarcerated serial killers. His research led him to conclude that there was a specific pattern to many serial killers’ behavior.

This crime series, based largely on a true story, is brilliant and intense. It is so refreshing compared to other new Netflix shows.

Peaky Blinders | IMDb RATING 8.8

Based on real events, Peaky Blinders tells the story of the fictional Shelby family, a working-class gang that operates out of Birmingham, England, during the aftermath of World War I.

Cillian Murphy (Inception) plays Tommy Shelby, the charismatic leader and most fearless member of the family. His brother Arthur (Paul Anderson) is also a prominent member and helps Tommy to run the family business.

The show is set in 1919 when the British nobility have lost their power but before all the modern conveniences we know today, such as electricity and cars, have been invented. Each season includes overarching stories involving the larger historical events surrounding the real Great Britain.

Peaky Blinders refers to a type of knife (specifically a “pricker”), but historically it referred to a style of hat worn by 19th century English gangsters that had hidden razors into the peaks of their caps

This crime series is hard to turn off once started. You will be completely invested in the characters and events within minutes. This show is perfect for anyone who enjoys a good crime story with realistic characters and looking for new series to watch on Netflix.

Better Call Saul | IMDb RATING 8.8

What makes one episode of Better Call Saul worth watching is the same thing that made Breaking Bad such a great show. It’s the slow build to a payoff that you never see coming. The story of Better Call Saul begins almost like a prequel. Prior to the events of Breaking Bad, there is Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer who’s still trying to find his place in the world.

We meet him as he’s about to join one of Albuquerque’s law firms, hoping for a simple and dull life. But he has yet to get his life on track, and this will lead him down a slippery slope towards an inevitable fate that is at the same time better and worse than what he planned for himself.

So, next time, when you’re looking for your next binge-worthy, the above list of the top 5 crime web series on Netflix will defiantly help you.
