Her father was a film director and one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios and her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, is a former playback singer. Her brother Raja is a film director and producer. When Rani was just 16, she was approached by Salim Akhtar to play the lead in his debut venture “Aa Gale Lag Jaa” but his father declined the offer thinking Rani is too young and should complete her education first. In 1996, she debuted with the Bengali film “Biyer Phool” which was her father’s film. Then in the same year, she made her Bollywood debut with “Raja Ki Ayegi Baarat” which was written and directed by Ashok Gaikwad. The film failed to do well at the box office and Rani went unnoticed. After this Rani went back to complete her studies and returned to movies in 1998. This year she starred in a film that provided her both commercial and critical success. These films were Gulaam opposite Aamir Khan and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai opposite Shahrukh Khan. Ghulam’s song Aati Kya Khandala is still very popular among the audience. The two films thus proved Rani’s caliber as an actor and brought her much-needed fame and movies offers. But many of these movies failed to perform well at the box office, except for Baadal which was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2000.
It was the 2002 film Saathiya under the Yashraj banner which established Rani completely into the industry. After this Rani went on to star in numerous hits and superhit films and remained the top actress of the 2000s. In her entire career, Rani has appeared in several successful and praiseworthy films such as Black, Veer-Zaara, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Yuva, Hum-Tum, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Bunty Aur Babli, No one killed Jessica, Talaash, and Mardani among others. Her performance of a physically challenged girl in the 2005 film Black opposite received a lot of praise from both critics and the audience and also inspired many people.
