Life Story

Milkha Singh was born on 20 November 1929 in Govindpura, which is presently in Pakistan. He has many siblings, but before the partition, their 8 siblings had died. After this, his mother and father were murdered in front of him due to the riots of the time of Partition. He says that the last words of his father were like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. His father’s last words here became his identity and then Milkha Singh ran in such a way that he won many gold medals in his name. On the last words of his father, his biography film was named “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”. However Milkha Singh came to India after escaping from the riots and he stayed with his sister for some time, during which he also had to go to jail for traveling without a ticket.

To get him out of jail, his sister had to sell some of her gold jewellery. Apart from this, he also stayed in Purana Qila Refugee Camp for some time. After this, at one point, Milkha Singh had become very upset with his life, even he had thought of becoming a dacoit, but after understanding his brother, he joined the Indian Army. For the first time in 1951, he got to know about athletics. Due to his amazing natural running qualities, the Indian Army selected him for special training in athletics. India did not have much facilities for Olympics or athletics at that time but still Milkha Singh worked hard and hard. In 1956, Milkha Singh came to participate in the Melbourne Olympics from India’s side but he did not get success there. But during this time he met Charles Jenkins, who was the champion of the 400m race. Charles Jenkins taught him a lot about running and race and Milkha Singh applied it in his life as well and then what to say after 1958, only Milkha Singh dominated everywhere. He won many gold medals and never looked back and went on climbing the stairs of success.
