Chinnaponnu was born in Suranam, a small village in the Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu. The names of her parents are not known. Also, there is no information available about her education. Chinnaponnu developed a keen interest in music at a very young age. She started performing and singing in temple festivals and churches when she was just 13 years old.
Chinnaponnu got married in 1990 to composer and percussionist Selva Kumar. They have composed music together ever since. Both have also performed at many events together.

Career Path of Chinnaponnu
Chinnaponnu began her professional singing career by singing in the troupe of fellow folk artist Kottaisamy, whom she credits as her mentor. Later her voice was noticed by K.A. Gunasekaran, a leading researcher on the folk arts and folk songs of Tamil Nadu, who also had close ties to the Communist Party of India. Gunasekaran helped promote her performances in different parts of the state.
In 2004, she got her break into the Tamil film industry as a playback singer with the song “Vazhthuren Vazhthuren” in the film Chandramukhi, starring Rajinikanth and Jyothika. The song was a hit. In 2010, she was one of the artists featured in the theme song for the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010, composed by A. R. Rahman, with a video directed by Gautham Menon. In 2010 and 2011, her troupe was one of the headlining acts at the Chennai Sangamam festival.
In June 2011, she appeared on MTV Coke Studio television series in the episodes ‘Vethalai’ and ‘Tere Naam’ along with singer Kailash Kher and Papon. In 2012, she debuted into the Telugu film industry with the song Pattuko Pattuko in the movie Bus Stop with music by JB.
Her song “Nakka Mukka” was a huge hit and she received widespread acclaim and success with this. In 2021, she participated in BIGG BOSS TAMIL SEASON 5 as a contestant. However, she was eliminated on the 28th day. She was only the only age to survive till the 4th week.
